Skardu Travel Guide: Gateway to the Great Peaks

Elijah Tours Team June 14, 2026 7 min read

Skardu is where Pakistan's wildest landscapes converge — a high desert valley ringed by the Karakoram, home to shimmering alpine lakes and the launch point for expeditions to K2 and the world's greatest peaks.

Getting to Skardu

The quickest way is the scenic 45-minute flight from Islamabad, one of the most beautiful mountain flights on earth, passing directly by Nanga Parbat.

By road, the upgraded Skardu Road from Gilgit is a stunning 6–7 hour journey along the Indus. We book flights first and keep road transfers as a reliable backup.

Best time to visit

May to October is ideal, with warm days and accessible lakes and valleys. July and August are peak trekking months for those heading toward Concordia and K2 base camp.

Top things to do

Visit the mirror-like Shangrila (Lower Kachura) and Upper Kachura lakes, sandboard the Katpana Cold Desert, and explore the historic Kharpocho Fort above the Indus.

Adventurous travelers can day-trip toward the Deosai Plains — the second-highest plateau in the world, blanketed with summer wildflowers.

Where to stay

Skardu town has comfortable hotels and resorts, while Shangrila Resort offers an iconic lakeside stay. Book early in peak season as trekking groups fill rooms fast.

Plan your Skardu trip

Skardu is best experienced alongside Hunza on a full northern circuit. Our 8-day Hunza & Skardu package covers both with all logistics handled — just message us to reserve your dates.
