Cappadocia Hot-Air Balloon Guide: Timing, Cost & Tips
Floating over the fairy chimneys at sunrise is the single most photographed experience in Turkey — and with a little planning it is far easier and safer than most first-timers expect.
When balloons actually fly
Flights leave around 45 minutes before sunrise and are cleared by the civil aviation authority each morning. Wind and visibility cancel roughly one morning in four during winter and about one in ten from May to September.
Always plan at least two nights in Göreme so a cancelled morning still leaves you a second chance.
Booking safely
Book with licensed operators only, confirm the basket size (smaller baskets cost more but give everyone a rail spot), and check whether the price includes hotel pick-up, insurance, and the certificate breakfast.
We book flights on your behalf with vetted operators and hold your slot before you land.
What to wear and bring
Mornings are cold even in summer — layers, closed shoes, and a light jacket. Hats blow off easily, so leave them in the van.
Bring a phone strap or wrist loop for photos, and keep the horizon in frame at sunrise for the classic shot with a hundred balloons behind you.
If you would rather stay on the ground
Sunrise from the Göreme panorama or Love Valley viewpoints is free and spectacular. Our guide takes you to the best spot for the morning light, balloon ride or not.
